The Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) in collaboration with the British Council will send eight students and four members to the United Kingdom (UK) for a training programme, announced its vice chancellor Dr Mohammad Ali Shaikh on Tuesday.
He said this while addressing students and guests at the conclusion of a public speaking competition organised by the varsity with British Council at its Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto auditorium.
Shaikh said the university had devised a method for the selection of students and faculty for participating in the training programme in the UK.
He said good public speaking skills were a must for being selected but the university, earlier, had also conducted written tests of the students.
At the end of the selection process, he said, candidates will be interviewed and those with the highest overall scores will be selected.
He said SMIU will be the first public university of Pakistan to bear half the cost of sending students abroad for training. The remaining cost will be paid by the British Council.
Speaking as the chief guest, the director of British Council for Sindh and Balochistan, Robin Davies, appreciated the English-language skills, content and delivery of students who delivered speeches on a number of topics.
He said the SMIU was a historic institution of Pakistan and the British Council was also collaborating with it to hold a national conference on education in the near future.
