A Sindh High Court (SHC) division bench, headed by Chief Justice Faisal Arab on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman (PTI) Imran Khan and MNA Dr Arif Alvi from their respective constituencies.
Petitioner Rana Faizul Hasan had demanded the court to declare the party leaders ineligible after the audio conversation, regarding the attack on Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) station, was leaked; the PTI chairman could be heard appreciating the act pulled off by a crowd said to be attending the PTI and PAT sit-ins in Islamabad in August last year in order to pressurise PM Nawaz Sharif for an earlier resignation on charges of poll rigging.
Petitioner maintained that Khan and Alvi’s support for the act was a violation of their office oath.
He submitted that every citizen had to be loyal to the state and respect its institutions but the PTI leaders encouraged their supporters vandalising the building of the state television network in violation of Article 5 of the constitution.
The court had been prayed to direct secretary law and election commission of Pakistan to act in accordance with the law and disqualify them.
