Twenty tolas of gold was reported stolen from a jewellery shop in Paposh Nagar’s Sarafa Bazaar by a shopkeeper on Wednesday. According to police, the incident took place at Hasnain Jewellers and the identity of the robber was as yet unknown.

SHO Tariq Kamran said the shop owner told police that he had locked the store on Tuesday night before leaving, but when he returned in the morning, he found it unlocked. The shop owner claimed that 20 tolas of gold was missing.

The SHO said that police has registered an FIR and are investigating the case. Various shop owners of Sarafa Bazaar on Wednesday gathered outside to stage a protest against the police for its failure to provide security to them. They demanded the provincial government authorities to take notice of the increasing robbery incidents in the market and ensure their security.

However, District Central Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Rizwan Ahmed Khan told The News that shop owners of Sarafa Bazaar were served with a letter of advice under the Sindh Security of Vulnerable Establishments (SSVE) Bill two days earlier and were told to ensure the security of the market.

He said that shop owners claim to have gold worth millions of rupees in their shops, but do not bother hiring security guards to ensure security in the market during the night. SSP Khan added that under the SSVE Bill, Paposh Nagar’s Sarafa Bazaar has been declared a vulnerable establishment and therefore the market committee would have to take steps themselves to ensure their own security.
