Police have arrested the head of a bank robbers’ group along with his two companions who robbed a private bank branch in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on May 3 this year.
Addressing a press conference at his office on Tuesday, East Investigation-I Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Umar Tufail said that six men took away Rs5.3 million in two bags from cash counters of the private bank.
He said police started an investigation into the bank heist, and they arrested the ringleader, Azhar Maqsood alias Haji, along with his two companions, identified as Ayaz and Noor Aslam. SSP Tufail said the suspects disclosed the names of their companions as Laal Badshah, Mehboob, Javed, Noor Khan and Ziaullah.
He said the gang robbed the bank and took away the weapon of a security guard. He added police conducted a raid in Keamari on a tip-off from those arrested and recovered the snatched weapon and Rs336,000.
SSP Tufail said the robbers belonged to the Khyber Pakhtunkhawa districts of Mrdan and Kohat and admitted to their involvement in a number of bank robberies in various parts of Sindh. He said police had started interrogating the suspects and raids were being carried out to arrest their absconding companions.
