KARACHI: The renovation and development work on KMC’s swimming pool and diving pools has been almost completed, sources said.
The swimming pool would be opened next month, a high official of KMC sports, cultural and recreation department said.
He said that KMC swimming pool had been renovated with installation of a new filter plant and other necessary facilities and seating arrangement had been upgraded for spectators.
It is after 18 years that the pool has been renovated.
The tiles of the swimming pool have been removed and new ones put in their place, said an official.
He said that all water supply and sewerage lines of the swimming pool have been replaced. Fiber sheds would be installed over the sitting area of the spectators, he said.
A number of national, provincial and regional swimming competitions have been held at the pool. Besides, during the summer vacations the pool is used to organise a camp for school-going children.
It is the cheapest swimming facility in the city, used by hundreds of men, women, and children after getting membership against reasonable charges.
For two days a week the facility is reserved for women.
It has to be mentioned here that KMC’s most famous programme among the children, the summer camp, which is organised every year during schools summer vacations could not be held last year due to the development and renovation work.
The KMC high-ups say that this year during the summer vacations the summer camp will be organised in the traditional manner.
About the city’s solitary diving pool, the official said it was nearing completion and final touches were being given to it. It would be operational in a couple of months, he said.
He mentioned that the only diving pool of the city had not been operated for about two decades.
He said that the reopening of the diving pool would add to the charm of the KMC’s sports complex.
The pool fell into disuse after the diving boards had disappeared, the ladders of the boards had broken, and algae spread all over the pool.
They added that a person had died due to heart failure when he dived into the pool from the diving board.
Some technical faults were also observed due to which it could not be, technically, declared a diving pool.
The pool, which is adjacent to the swimming pool, is 46 feet in length, 20 feet in width and 22 in depth. KMC administration did not take any notice of the condition of this pool for a long time.
