PFA seals 15 food outlets in Punjab

LAHORE : Punjab Food Authority (PFA) on Thursday sealed another two food businesses in the metropolis and 13 food points in other cities of Punjab over violations of provincial food laws.

Food Safety Teams (FSTs) continued its crackdown, sealed catering unit, bakeries, fast food points, eateries, sweet shops and production units of different food products during raids on more than 3,000 food premises. PFA’s watchdogs have imposed heavy fine tickets to more than 250 Food Business Operators (FBOs) and served notices over 1800 food businesses for improvement in nine division of the Punjab.

The purpose of the drive was to ensure the sale of healthy and quality food in Punjab. PFA is taking a step towards completing Healthy Punjab Mission and fully committed to ensuring the implementation of food safety laws in Punjab.

In Lahore, PFA sealed famous bakery point and sauce production unit. A raiding team sealed Rahat Bakery for selling expired food products, preserve food in the rusted freezer, poor cleanliness arrangements and failing to provide food licence and medical certificates of workers in Harbanspura. As well, PFA has once again sealed a Decent Foods Sauce Production Unit over illegally de-sealing a unit in Shalimar Town. The authority also registered a case against the accused over intervention in government work and de-sealed a shop without getting permission from PFA. A team confiscated 400-kg substandard ready sauce, 100-kg starch, machinery, artificial colors and chemicals from the site.

Moreover, the authority sealed another 13 food points including two each in South Punjab and Sargodha, five food businesses in Gujranwala, three in Rawalpindi and pepper grinding mill (Chakki) in Faisalabad. Teams have sealed food businesses for using loose colours, adulteration in sauce and pepper, wrong labelling, poor hygiene issues and not following previous instructions of the authority.

The PFA discarded a huge quantity of substandard products during operation including 15,000 ice-lollies, 3050-kg adulterated pepper, 6500-kg pickles, 600 packs of banned Gutka item, 300-litre chemical contaminated milk, 60-litre juice of pomegranate, sweets, Chinese salt, carbonated drinks, artificial colours, chemicals and other food products.

Plantation drive: A tree plantation drive was started on Thursday at Mayo Hospital and King Edward Medical University hostels with the slogan “Plant a tree and help Lahore get rid of Smog”.

According to a press release, around 50 plants at Mayo Hospital while 70 plants were planted at the hostel.

Young Doctors Association (YDA) Pakistan General Secretary Dr Salman Kazmi urged the citizens to plant more trees this year with the objective to eliminate smog in coming winter.

UET: University of Engineering and Technology (UET) on Thursday organised a ceremony to award certificates among successful students of Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF).

According to a press release, the PSDF in collaboration with UET’s Al-Khwarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS) has been offering the professional training courses at UET in various fields such as Web Development, Graphic Designing, and Solar Energy, to name a few.

In his address, UET Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid emphasised on the importance of technology in today’s world. He also appreciated the efforts made by PSDF and government of the Punjab in boosting up the technological advancements in the province.

KICS director Prof Dr Waqar Mahmood also spoke on the occasion.

PU workshop: Punjab University (PU) Planning & Development in collaboration with Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, USAID organised a three-day workshop for personality grooming of USAID scholarship holder students.

The workshop “Talent grooming and career counseling workshop” held at Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology auditoriums as well as Centre for High Energy Physics (CHEP) simultaneously.

Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasira Jabeen was the chief guest at the certificate distribution ceremony. HEC Regional Director Nazir Hussain, father of Arfa Kareem (late) Col (r) Amjad Karim, PU Director Planning and Development Shabbir Sarwar, trainers from HEC & USAID and scholarship holder students were present on the occasion.

Prof Dr Nasira said education was getting very expensive and public sector universities were a beacon of hope for the talented students. She said students from diverse cultures were studying under one roof in PU. “Punjab University is a representative of the country because students from elite class and lower class are studying in the same discipline which is an example of equality,” said Nasira. The workshops focused on personality grooming, CV writing, communication skills developments, entrepreneurship ideas and presentation skills in 12 different sessions of the three-day activities.
