KUTS protest enters third day
A protest being held by the Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) for acceptance of their several demands entered its third consecutive day at the varsity on Wednesday.
The society had launched it protest in front of the Karachi University administration building on Monday, demanding 1.5 per cent additional increase in basic salary with arrears, deans research grant, execution of selection boards, commencement of scrutiny process and the implementation of medical policy for teachers.
Although members of KUTS are protesting, they haven’t yet announced to boycott the ongoing exams in the university. According to KUTS Secretary General Dr Moiz Khan, the protest will continue until the administration accepts their demands.
Khan said that it was decided in the KUTS meeting that teachers would wear black arm bands in the KU senate meeting as a mark of their protest. However, the meeting was not held due the implementation of the new Universities and Institutions law passed by the Sindh.
“KUTS would continue its struggle for the rights of teachers,” he said. “Our demands were not for any selfish goals but for the benefit of the whole teaching community and our alma mater, Karachi University.”
He added that KUTS would stage a protest in front of the admin block on May 10 at 12:15 pm. A day earlier, the All Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association has also announced its support for the KUTS protest. The association issued a statement on Tuesday stating that teaching is the basic responsibility of faculties but they were forced to hold protest for their rights.
