The growing trend in the Pakistani entertainment industry is to create dramas, telefilms and movies that are based on real-life events. Earlier this year, a seven-year-old girl from Kasur was raped and then murdered. Now, a short film which is based on this tragic event is being produced and will air on one of the private TV channels. This decision has made me think about the victim’s family who is still in the state of mourning. What will happen when the victim’s family will relive the events that led to the tragic end of the small child?
Undoubtedly, child abuse is a serious issue and the one that must be dealt with in an effective manner. However, the re-enactment of such events will lead to nothing. Child abuse is a topic that should have been addressed way before this incident. It is not about girls or boys, it’s about the children who are victims. We need to educate our children. We need to educate children’s parents and guardians. There is no denying that visual aid is much more powerful in sending a message across, but the dramatisation of news is not enough. Analysing the risk factors and devising and disseminating protective strategies is the need of time.
