PFA seals 39 food points in Punjab

LAHORE: Punjab Food Authority (PFA) Friday sealed 39 food businesses, including ice factories, beverages distributors, restaurants, production units and fast food point over failure to maintain the hygienic working environment and on account of adulteration in Punjab.

Whereas, authority penalised 111 food points with Rs775,500 fine tickets and served notices on 2,000 another outlets for improvement due to failure to meet the food safety standards and poor hygienic conditions.

On the directions of PFA Director General Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, Food Safety Teams under the supervision of Food Safety Officers visited thousands of shops and ensured the quality of food. The teams conducted raids in the nine divisions of Punjab.

PFA Lahore sealed three food premises, including ice factory, production unit of chocolate and beverage distributors for improper cleanliness arrangements, usage of substandard ingredients and presence of expired drinks. The food businesses were sealed, including a chocolate unit in Green Town, Ice Factory on Bhogiwal Road and Hamza Waleed traders (beverage distributors) on Ghoray Shah Road.

The authority sealed two shops each in Rawalpindi and Sargodha, 10 in Gujranwala and 22 food businesses in South Punjab.The authority imposed fine of Rs244,000 on 38 outlets in South Punjab, Rs88,000 fine on 17 shops in Rawalpindi, Rs156,000 fine on 13 food business operators in Sargodha, Rs98,500 fine in Faisalabad, Rs64,500 fine on eight FBOs in Lahore and 18 shopkeepers charged with Rs124,000 fine in Gujranwala.

A huge quantity of substandard products was discarded, including 2,150 ice blocks, 80kg adulterated pepper, 80kg mango pulp, 50litre ice cream, 100 litre milk, rotten eggs, beverages, snacks, and many other commodities.
