KARACHI: Puri Estate emerged triumphant in the Hubco Cup Bridge Tournament which concluded here at the Aslam Bridge Hall, housed in the National Stadium, on the Pakistan Day.
A total of 14 outfits took part in the two-day event organised by the Karachi Bridge Associates (KBA). Besides the top players of the metropolis, there was also participation from Lahore in the shape of Farrukh Liaquat, while the presence of Imran Abidi from Kuwait gave it an international flavor.
Puri Estate, having the likes of Mubashir Puri, Hamid Mohiuddin, Hasan Askari, Khalid Mohiuddin and Ziaulllah Baig, won the trophy by virtue of its consistency in the Swiss Movement event spread over eight rounds.
Tehsin, another star-studded outfit, featuring Pervaiz Mirza, Rashid-ul-Ghazi, Imran Abidi, Shahin Iqbal and Hasan Jawad, gave excellent display of their game and perfect combinations as they secured runners-up spot.
Karachi Gymkhana, having stars of the yesteryears like Sattar Cochinwala, Mansoor Habib, Zakaria and Usman Ansari, offered stiff challenge to all the competitors to finish third. They donated the entire prize money to the KBA.
Combined having Nasim Arzoo, Saleem Zaki, Dr Sarfraz, Tanvir Mazahir and Farhat Abbas, fought gallantly throughout the eight rounds. Their struggle for thwarting all attempts paid and they succeeded to reach at the fourth and last prize winning position.
At the end of the tournament, Tariq Rasheed Khan, Director, Mind Sports Association of Pakistan (MSAP) and a former President of the Pakistan Bridge Federation (PBF), distributed the prizes among the top teams.
