Although the constitution has declared 16 to be the age of marriage of girls, there are many girls under 16 who are married to men who are double their age. The laws will have no standing unless they are strictly implemented across the country. Early marriages pose serious health risks to girls. In addition, many girls cannot handle the pressure of a married life. Some have even committed suicide because of the unhappiness that they have to deal with.
Psychologists all over the country have been against early marriages. But their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. There are so many factors that compel parents to get their young daughters married. The authorities concerned, including the healthcare department, should join hands to put an end to this practice, which is putting the lives of girls in danger.
