ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Tuesday said the practice of rigging and coercion in the elections should come to an end now.
He said the governments in 2013 and even earlier were not formed through transparent elections, but through rigging and coercion. “I hope the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) gets full authority to conduct free and fair elections and if institutions became part of the old game, then they will not be loyal to the country,” Khursheed Shah said while talking to media persons at his chamber in the Parliament House.
The opposition leader said he hoped that the Election Commission will hold free, fair and transparent elections and no one would raise doubts about the fairness of the elections. To a question, he said the concerns raised by Nawaz Sharif, PPP, PTI or any other political party over fairness of the elections depict their loyalty with the Constitution and people of Pakistan. He said all the political parties should be given level playing field to contest the elections.
“If Nawaz Sharif understands this issue, then he should have raised his reservations on the 2013 elections,” he said. To a question about the future of Nawaz Sharif, the opposition leader said it depends on the existing situation as Nawaz made a promise of ending power loadshedding by 2018, but he could not keep his promise.
