Let’s talk about cricket

April 01, 2018

That West Indies will be touring Pakistan this month demonstrates the improved security situation of the country due to concerted and determined efforts of the armed forces and law-enforcement agencies. These cricket matches involving international cricketers are also building a positive image of the country in the world.

It is also important to emphasise that cricket enthusiasts should patiently bear with the security arrangements that are being made for these international cricket matches. This is because these arrangements are made to ensure the safety of cricket enthusiasts and provide a peaceful and conducive environment for international and local cricketers.

Although the return of international cricket is laudable, the authorities must not shy away from its responsibility to proviide basic necessities – electricity, clean water and education –to all citizens of the country. Cricket is not the only solution to bring Pakistan’s good days back and create a positive image of the country in the world. For just a simple game, the entire city was almost shut down.

The authorities spend a hefty budget on decorating and cleaning only those areas that surrounded the stadium and the roads on which international players would travel. Real progress will come when the authorities will be successful in providing basic necessities to citizens.

The third season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was a success. The event’s final was played in Karachi and offered a fun-filled evening to the city’s cricket-starved residents. The love and enthusiasm that people have showed for cricket is incredible. Now, people are waiting for the T20 series that will be played against West Indies.

The response that the PSL has received in the country shows that our people love the game. Cricket also plays an important role in creating unity among people. It is hoped that more events will be organised in the country to give people an opportunity to keep their differences aside and enjoy the event.
