LAHORE
The Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights (MoLJHR) and The Asia Foundation (TAF) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for protection and promotion of human rights in the country.
In this connection, the MoLJHR and TAF jointly organised an orientation workshop on Thursday in Lahore on the project ‘Strengthening Human Rights Capacities of Provincial Governments’.
The project involves strategic collaboration with the provincial governments to promote and protect human rights and responsibly address issues of abuses and violations. The TAF, in partnership with the MoLJHR, and provincial departments concerned, will review and analyse existing laws, policies, and procedures to identify and address the gaps, opportunities, and challenges of effective implementation of human rights.
The project, in consultation with all stakeholders, will build the capacity of tri-partite (provincial-federal-civil society) partners to promote better working relationships and communication/information sharing.
More than 200 participants from government departments, civil society organisations, academia and media attended the workshop and shared their comments and recommendations.
These suggestions will be shared with the relevant stakeholders in public and private sector to further improve human rights situation.
DG (Human Rights) at MoLJHR Muhammad Arshad said the ministry was collaborating with The Asia Foundation in all provinces to improve the situation in Pakistan.
Other panellists who contributed to the discussion included Justice (r) Nasira Javed, Dr Mufti Akeel-ur-Rehman Pirzada, Bishop Irfan Shabbir and Kishwar Shaheen Awan.
