KARACHI: World boxing governing body (AIBA) took a prompt action and removed its history portion it had given on its official website after ‘The News’ on Thursday carried a story which said that the world body had missed name of its longest serving former president Professor Anwar Chowdhry while giving details of its presidents.
“It’s a great step by AIBA as it was a huge blunder and needed to be corrected,” former international referee/judge Ali Akbar Shah told this correspondent on Friday. The late Chowdhry, who died on June 19, 2010, has served for 20 years as AIBA chief from 1986 to 2006. He also remained as AIBA’s vice-president from 1966 to 1974 and secretary from 1974-1986. He overall served for 40 years in different capacities.
AIBA’s website had carried the names of its presidents Emile Gremaux of France (1946-1959), Rudyard H Russell of England (1962-1974), Nikiforov Denisov of former USSR (1974-1978), Col Don F Hull of USA (1978-1986), Dr Ching-Kuo Wu of Chinese Taipei (2006-2017) but had missed Chowdhry which had raised many eyebrows in Pakistan.
