Justice Ameer Hani Muslim orders repair of water storage, treatment sites

NAWABSHAH: The Supreme Court nominated Chief Water Commission Justice (retd) Ameer Hani Muslim has directed urgent repairs and clean up of the water storage and treatment sites along the Rohri Canal within a fortnight, warning of strict action in case of non compliance. He gave the directions following inspection of several projects including Ultra-filtration plant, Water Treatment Plant, Rohri Canal and Water Supply Phase-5 project.

Expressing his dismay at the lack of cleanliness and hygiene at the storage and treatment facilities, Justice (retd) Muslim said it is severe injustice that despite spending billions of rupees the public is not getting clean drinking water. During the briefing, the Water Commission Chief was informed that the Ultra-filtration Plant was built at a cost of Rs.1.54 billion and is producing 14 MGD. However, protesting public informed Justice (retd) Muslim that contrary t o the claims the plant is only producing 1.5MGD. Justice (retd) Muslim sought a report about the performance of the project.

The media representatives told the visiting Water Commission chief that despite being the largest water cleaning plant, the people are constrained to use contaminated water leading to severe health problems of Diarrhea, Hepatitis and other intestinal diseases.

The media men informed Justice (retd) Muslim that the water and sewerage lines of the city need rehabilitation as most of them are damaged causing fecal contamination due to mixing of sewage with potable areas.
