Man gets life in jail for infant daughter’s murder

A man was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday for murdering his three-year-old daughter in February 2011. The convict, Mohammad Iqbal, was accused of stabbing and fatally injuring his infant daughter, three-year-old Dania, following a heated quarrel with his wife. The murder took place at the couple’s house in Frere police limits on February 18, 2011.

The convict had initially tried to blame his wife, Naseem Fatima, for the child’s murder but later confessed to the killing during interrogation. The Additional District and Sessions Judge (South), after hearing all arguments and examining the evidence produced, sentenced Iqbal – who was already in jail – to life in prison.

The District South judicial magistrate hearing the Zafir Zuberi murder case accepted the interim charge sheet and fixed January 25 as the next date of hearing.

On Monday, the court issued production orders for the key accused, Khawar Burney, and two of his accomplices, Junaid Shah and Abdur Rehman The interim charge sheet submitted contains findings against Burney and the other co-accused. The court ordered for all three men to be presented for the January 25 hearing.

The key accused, Burney, has recorded his confessional statement under Section 164 of Criminal Procedure Code. He was also identified by witnesses at an identification parade conducted by the judicial magistrate concerned.

In his confessional statement, Burney admitted to having killed Zafir but said it was a “mistake” as he was aiming to shoot the tyres of the victim’s car. One of the co-accused, Abdur Rehman, has also recorded his confessional statement, stating under oath that Burney was the one who fired at and killed Zafir.

Rehman said that Burney had chased Zafir’s car and fired multiple times at the vehicle and its occupants. The third accused, Junaid Shah, was initially out on interim bail but it was cancelled on the case IO’s request.

When his bail was rescinded, Shah had escaped from the court but was soon arrested.

Intizar murder case

A judicial magistrate for District South extended till January 27 the physical remand of police officers under arrest for the murder of a young man, Intizar Ahmed, in DHA on January 14. The case investigation officer (IO) produced the eight detained cops in court and asked the judhed for an extension in the period of physical remand. The IO said there was a need to further interrogate the arrested policemen. The court granted the plea and allowed him to keep the accused in custody till January 27.
