Trash of the titans

Karachi is considered to be a bustling metropolis that draws many into its fold. But nowadays, it is also considered to be one of the most polluted cities of Pakistan owing to the massive heaps of garbage that are strewn across the city’s streets.

The garbage situation in Karachi has worsened over time. Open sewage drains and garbage dumps have given rise to many harmful diseases. Karachi is the economic hub of Pakistan. However, there is no one to look after this city. The beauty of Karachi has been concealed under heaps of garbage along the streets and roadsides. Sanitary workers never deposit waste in the designated spaces and instead throw it along the sidewalks and in drains. More often than not, sanitary workers do not perform their duties. As a result, garbage dumps have been lying unattended for weeks. Garbage disposal has become essential and indispensable for Karachi. The city needs serious attention and it is also a matter of great concern for the higher authorities. The Sindh government and the local government should look into this matter and take proper steps to make Karachi clean and beautiful again.

We have a tendency to ignore the seemingly trivial matters that exert a strong impact on our lives. The growing unwillingness to use dustbins that are placed along the street corner, behind room doors and beneath office tables is a case in point. More often than not, we throw our garbage in empty plots outside our homes and entirely disregard the adverse effects of this practice on our environment.

As educated citizens, we often forget the hazards cause by polluting the environment. Conventional wisdom would have us believe that litter is the primary cause of environmental pollution and can easily make us ill and sick. Cleanliness is not only limited to our bodies and homes. Instead, we have a responsibility to keep society and the environment clean by using dustbins. If we take care of such minute matters, we can make a healthy and prosperous Pakistan that is free of germs and diseases.
