Islamabad: Keeping up with its activities showcasing the rich, varied culture and historical events of Indonesia, the embassy has organised screening of a film on the life of Soekarno, the first President of Indonesia. The screening will take place at the Indonesian embassy auditorium on February 28 and is by invitation.
‘Soekarno’ is a 2013 Indonesian biographical film directed by Hanung Bramantyo, and written by Ben Sihombing. The story follows the life of Soekarno, who was born with the name ‘Kusno’ and was one of the many historical figures who played a part in the fight for Indonesia’s freedom, right from his childhood until he proclaimed Indonesia’s independence with M. Hatta.
In 1931, the Dutch East Indies Government in Java Island had captured Soekarno, who was an aspiring young man who wanted to free Indonesia from Dutch colonialism. He was then put in Banceuy Prison at Bandung, Indonesia. He found a way to fight back by delivering his famous defence speech, ‘Indonesia Acccuse!’ during his trial at Bandung Laandraad Courthouse. The film stars Ario Bayu as Soekarno, Lukman Sardi, Maudy Kusnaedi, Tika Bravani and Tanta Ginting.
The film was selected as the Indonesian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.
