Nedelko beats Riba to lift ITF Futures trophy
ISLAMABAD: Ivan Nedelko of Russia stayed up to his seeding by winning the men’s singles final in the $15,000 Serena ITF Futures International I tennis tournament here at the PTF Complex Sunday.
The Russian edged out local crowd favourite and former world No 65 Pere Riba (Spain) 6-3, 6-4.
Nedelko turned out to be eventual winner courtesy to some world class forehand shots that not only stunned his opponent but the good crowd present at the court.
An early break for Nedelko was enough to give him ascendency in the first set. Russian’s sizzling serve backed by his off and on forehand winner down the line turned out to his forte in the first set. Twice Riba came close to breaking back but every time Russian stood up to the challenge and saved his lead to perfection.
The second set followed the same pattern and again one break was enough for Nedelko to take early initiative. He kept up his lead till the end to win the $15,000 event in style.
The powerful Russian had everything in control throughout the final with Riba struggling to find his form and touch that was seen during his semi-finals.
“I was not hundred percent fit and was struggling with sore throat. Possibly the weather here has its impact,” the Spaniard said.
Though Riba tried to play consistent game, he was seen struggling against forehand rippers. Riba’s shots were lacking force and quality that should have been the hallmark of former world No 65.
“I would be back in Future II where I am drawn to meet Nedelko in the semis,” Riba said.
The beaming 31-year old Nedelko was happy to win the final in two sets. “It was an easy win considering the fact his opponent was none other than former world No 65. Clay has always been my favourite surface and it was no exception here.”
Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan Sadik Babur Girgin was the chief guest at the final.
PTF President Salim Saifullah during his speech expressed his pleasure at the successful conduct of the tournament and thanked sponsors — Serena Hotels — and PTF team as well as the government and all its functionaries especially the law enforcement agencies, media, players and all the guests for making it possible to hold such a prestigious event in Islamabad. He also invited international players to visit Pakistan and participate in the future sports events especially tennis.
Nedelko was presented with winners’ trophy while runners-up trophy was given to Riba.
Serena Open ladies and junior events winners were also awarded trophies. Ushna Sohail went on to win ladies’ event beating Sarah Mansoor in the final. Junior Under-18 title was won by Yousaf Khalil who beat Amin Atiq in the final.
