WANA: Five persons, including the head of a pro-government peace committee, were killed and three others injured in an improvised explosive device explosion in the Serwakai subdivision of South Waziristan Agency on Thursday.
South Waziristan's Political Agent Zafrul Islam Khattak said those killed included head of the peace committee Malik Wali Jan Mehsud. The other deceased were identified as Ahmed Gul, Mewa Khan, Zaman Khan and Yardil Khan.
"They were travelling in a vehicle when they were targetted in an IED attack in the Spinkai area of Serwakai subdivision. Five of them, including the peace committee head Wali Jan Mehsud, died on the spot and three others were injured," he said.
He said the injured were shifted to the adjacent Tank district for treatment. The Political Agent said the tribesmen were supporting the government in maintaining peace in the militancy-torn South Waziristan Agency. He added the security forces had been engaged in the fight against local and foreign militants since 2003.
