PESHAWAR:  Despite ban on corporal punishment, the practice still continues as a seventh grader was allegedly beaten up by his teacher and the student was taken to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) thereafter.
Zahir Shah, uncle of the student, said that his nephew Ibrar was studying at a private school on Urmar Road in Peshawar.
He alleged that a female teacher fractured Ibrar’s arm and he was taken to LRH.
He said the teacher had given some assignment to Ibrar and his classmates and he was discussing it with his friends when the teacher started thrashing him for making noise in the class. He said his arm was fractured due to the thrashing.
Zahir Shah said he tried to contact with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection and Welfare Commission to take up the matter, but in vain.
The injured student, Ibrar, complained that the teacher in question always punished students.
Child Rights activist Imran Takar said that corporal punishment was banned in all governments and private schools in KP.
He said that under Article (34) of KP Child Protection and Welfare Act 2010, “Whosever causes or permits to cause corporal punishment, through omission or commission, in any form, under any circumstances or for any purpose, to a child, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or with fine which may extend to 50,000 rupees, or with both.”
He added that corporal punishment had long-lasting physical and psychological effect on children and it was the major cause of dropouts from schools. He called for introducing legislation to deal the matter to protect children from being subjected to physical punishment.
