Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan chief Dr Farooq Sattar said on Wednesday that while his party has been arranging for machines to lift Karachi's garbage and to clean up the city, the Sindh government has only been busy setting up "money making machines".
He said the MQM-P was actively helping chairmen of union councils arrange machinery for lifting of garbage from their jurisdictions, adding that the party was no more relying on others for this purpose.
He was speaking at a ceremony held yesterday to hand over 13 tractors to the Solid Waste Management Department of the Korangi DMC. The ceremony was arranged at the Rashid Latif Academy Ground in Korangi No. 5.
Members of the national and provincial assemblies, Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar, DMC Korangi chairman Nayyar Raza, vice chairman Ahmer Ali, elected representatives of the KMC, and DMC officers were present on the occasion.
Dr Farooq Sattar said only three roads were constructed in Karachi after spending hundreds of billions rupees collected in taxes. The provincial government spent seven-and-a-half billion rupees to construct three roads, he said, adding his party’s representatives could establish nine such roads in the same amount.
Addressing the ceremony, the city mayor said the administrators had destroyed the cit. “Now we are restoring all the areas and the departments in the KMC and the DMCs,” he added.
“We are gradually restoring the lost image of the city. The DMC Korangi had done well in limited resources and provided good facilities to residents of Landhi and Korangi.”
He said his administration had started development works and restoration of basic infrastructure despite having limited resources.
Speaking on the occasion, Korangi DMC Chairman Nayyar Raza said that 2,300 tons of garbage were generated in the Korangi Zone on a daily basis. He said Rs2.2 million were spent to procure the machinery to clean the garbage and dispose of it to landfill sites on a daily basis.
He said the industrial zones in Landhi and Korangi were also being provided with basic municipal facilities to solve the problems of millions of mill workers and industry owners.
