Capital facing water shortage for water level decline in big dams

Islamabad :The supply of water to the capital city from two big dams – Simly Dam and Khanpur Dam -- has been reduced in the face of declining water level in these reservoirs due to inadequate rainfalls in last few months.
“At the moment Islamabad is receiving 24 MGD water from Simly Dam and 6 MGD from Khanpur Dam. Currently, the demand of water in the city is 95 MGD but due to less rains it is receiving only 50 MGD,” the official data said.
Director Water Supply Jameel Butt said the less rains have caused decline in water level in the dams so the supply of water to Islamabad has been reduced for the time being.
“We will, hopefully, restore the normal supply of water to Islamabad in near future. Any rainfall in next few days can also change the whole scenario and provide adequate amount of water in dams,” he said. He said the increase in population is also one of the main factors due to which they are also looking towards others sources to meet the demand of clean drinking water in the capital city.
