This refers to the article, ‘Drawing board’ (Nov 12) by Farrukh Saleem. The writer says that our political culture, being dynastic, doesn’t provide competition in politics to let the best people emerge and provide able leadership to the country. In dynastic politics, it may not be possible for a youngster with his or her limited or no experience in politics to provide the same leadership which a seasoned politician who has gone through innumerable odds in life and handled various complex situations successfully during his political career can provide.
In dynastic politics, political families tend to create their monopoly around the political sphere making it almost impossible for a newcomer – no matter how competent the person is – to break in. This gives rise to a system where new people and ideas are neither welcomed nor encouraged. Under such system, clan, tribe and caste play a major role in the perpetuation of the family’s interests. The concept of dynastic politics is not Pakistan-specific. There are powerful political families in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Singapore, etc., who have been engaging in this type of politics for decades,
