The UN has warned that opium production in Afghanistan has increased to a great extent. United Nation’s Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has shared the news that opium production has almost doubled in the past 12 months in Afghanistan. Increase in opium production will further aggravate the conditions of Afghanistan and its neighbouring countries. Some parts where opium is produced in abundance are controlled by militants. Last year 4,700 tonnes of opium was produced in the country and this year the figure has doubled. This will enhance terrorism in the region. About 47 percent opium is made in Afghanistan’s province Helmand which shares the border with Pakistan. It is cross-border drug trade. Opium is smuggled to Pakistan through Fata and Balochistan.
An emerging culture of drug addiction, particularly among Pakistani youngsters, is worrisome and dangerous. More worrisome is the prompt surge in drug use among college- and school-going students. Increased production of opium is alarming for Pakistan. The easy availability of drugs will result in street crimes, domestic violence, mental unrest and serious health threats. It is important for Pakistan to keep proper checks and balances on opium smuggling. Strict rules are needed to be implemented in education institutions to prevent open usage of opium and other drugs. More rehabilitation centres must be established for saving the lives of drug addicts. The government should launch an effective campaign to raise awareness among young students. Through seminars, debates and TV discussions, people can be engaged in intelligent debates and can work together to discourage the usage of drugs.
