Set to travel abroad, former federal minister and Pakistan Peoples Party leader Dr Asim Hussain, who is currently facing a number of corruption charges, announced on Friday he was stepping down as the party’s Karachi Division president.
According to a spokesman for the former minister, Dr Asim met with the party’s leadership and informed it about his decision since he was to leave the country. He informed senior officials that he would not be able to discharge his responsibilities as the city president owing to a surgery he is likely to undergo for the problem in his back.
He said his services would remain available as a member of the party. His request was accepted by the PPP leadership.
In a statement issued later on Friday, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari appreciated the former minister’s services for the party.
“Dr Asim Hussain worked dedicatedly for the PPP as its Karachi Division president despite his poor health deteriorating further during his incarceration,” maintained Bilawal.
He said Dr Asim following his recovery will be given a fresh and important assignment upon his return to the country.
