Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani has underlined the need for holding population census at the earliest saying without it any elections would be totally useless.
He was talking to The News here on Monday before the Sindh Assembly session.
Durrani regretted that there was an inordinate delay in holding population census as last census was held 16 years ago and said that the federal government should announce to hold census before local bodies’ elections. Durrani mentioned that there would surely be increase in the numbers of seats of national and provincial assemblies after the census as population has swelled manifold in last 16 years.
Replying to a question about the delimitation in Sindh, the speaker said the revenue department has all the record and only it could give the real picture about the delimitation.
It is to note that despite that every party had promised before general elections to hold the LB polls if elected to power the local bodies elections were in limbo in every province.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement had challenged the local government ordinance and delimitation in Sindh and both the ordinances were declared null and void. Answering to a question, Durrani agreed that delay in census was resulting in many problems such as distribution of resources among the provinces.
