Two labourers working on the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Project were buried alive on Wednesday after a mound of earth collapsed on them at a site near Peshawar Morr.
Both the workers identified as Sohail Khan, 24, son of Nasir Khan and Abdul Wali, 28 son of Farman Ali, died before the rescuers could reach the scene and took them out of the mound. They were hailing from Mardan.
Five labouers have been buried alive during the last six months while working at Metro Bus Project, the police sources, quoting a report said.
The people witnessing the scene, told the police that some labourers were working at underpass sewerage line of Metro Bus track when a mound of soil, caved in at mid of the day burying them alive.
The rescuers later removed the heap and took out the bodies and shifted them to PIMS. The administration informed their heirs to collect the bodies from the hospital.
Earlier, two labourers working on the same point of the Metro Bus Project were buried alive on August 13, 2014, after a mound of earth on them at a site near Peshawar Morr. Five labourers were busy in excavation work when they got trapped under a landslide. A side of the road completely caved in due to heavy rains.
Other labourers started rescuing their trapped colleagues along with rescue workers and brought out two labourers who were alive.
While, a labourer was buried and killed in October, 2014 when he slipped into the deep ditch with a loose heap of clay at Peshawar Morr.
A labour union leader, Mohammad Iqbal Khan claimed that the labourers, without any safety helmets, gloves and protective harnesses, working at project, are seen hanging on top of the shuttering structure on daily basis amid unsafe conditions.
In a couple of incidents in the recent past several labourers were injured when shuttering of the Metro Bus Service Project fell while three of them were injured after being electrocuted.
According to a report, three labourers working at the Metro Bus Project in Blue Area were injured by electrocution on October 27, 2014 after a crane accidentally touched a live wire during excavation and then the scaffolding pipes erected at the site. The labourers were identified as Shahjahan, Irfan and Badal.
In another incident six labourers doing construction work on Benazir Bhutto Road were injured on January 7, 2014 when a shuttering of the under construction elevated Metro Bus Service Project collapsed near Naz Cinema Chowk in the jurisdiction of Waris Khan Police Station. The labourers were busy working at the site without any sort of protective gear when the shuttering collapsed from a height of around nine feet. The injured were identified as Muhammad Shoiab, Sarfaraz Khan, Shakil, Muhammad Sajid, Mustafa and a passer-by.
