Fed up with persistent low to zero gas pressure in their homes, the residents of Bhabra Bazaar, Sarafa Bazaar and adjacent localities Friday staged a protest demonstration at Benazir Bhutto Road by burning tyres and raising slogans against the concerned authorities.
The angry protesters, included men, women and children, blocked Benazir Bhutto Road, causing a massive traffic jam for hours.
The women protesters, carrying utensils and other kitchen accessories, raised slogans against the government for not providing them gas since the arrival of winter season. The local management had to call police to control the situation.
The protesters warned the concerned authorities that they should take remedial steps and provide them gas with full pressure otherwise they could stage another sit-in today (Saturday).
“There is not enough gas supply even to make tea,” said Majeed Ahmed, a protester. He said life has become miserable for them since the onset of winter. “How could we survive in this situation and why we should pay bills when we are not getting gas,” he denounced.
“The protest at Benazir Bhutto Road against zero gas pressure is not an exception. It has become a routine in the whole city,” said Neelofar Mukhtar, a female protester. She said that men were going to work without having breakfast because of absence of gas.
The protesters said that the government was providing gas only to posh localities paying no heed to the problems being faced by lower-middle class. They warned that they would stage a big demonstration outside the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) office if it failed to improve the situation immediately.
