As part of efforts to pressure Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign from office, a delegation of the Paksitan Tehhreek-e-Insaf on Wednesday met leaders of the Karachi Bar Association and discussed the political situation emerging after submission of the report of the Joint Investigation Team formed by the Supreme Court.

The delegation led by PTI Sindh President MNA Dr Arif Alvi met the KBA leaders, including president Naeem Qureshi and secretary general Khalid Nawaz Marwat.  After the meeting, Alvi said that Nawaz Sharif had no moral ground to remain prime minister of the country and demanded that he step down immediately.

“What more evidence does the Sharif family now require? Each page of the JIT report contains evidence that goes against them. Nawaz Sharif and his ministers are out to malign the army and the apex court; this is a manifestation of their desperation as they continue to propagate the impression that they have been victims of some international conspiracy,” he said.

Alvi stated that even if this accountability was seen as a conspiracy, Imran Khan and the people of Pakistan would keep pursuing it. He said the rulers seemed prepared to take on national institutions and warned that such acts could prove dangerous for the country at large.

“In this situation, the legal community has a vital role to play if we are to strengthen democratic norms and ensure the supremacy of law.” KBA President Naeem Qureshi said the Pakistan Bar Council and the Supreme Court Bar Association would hold an “All Pakistan Lawyers’ Convention” in Lahore to discuss a future course of action.
