One thousand and fifty degrees were conferred on and 186 corporate gold medals and merit gold medals awarded to graduates of the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (Szabist) during the institute’s 11th convocation at the Expo Centre on Saturday.
Before the awarding of degrees and medals, Szabist acting president Shahnaz Wazir Ali highlighted the achievements of the institute.
“Szabist provides a holistic and profound educational environment to students without discrimination, without prejudice.”
She said the institute’s secular and pluralistic environment provided an opportunity to students to grow and actualise their potential.
“We have groomed our students to take up challenges and transform them into opportunities for self-growth and learning, persevere through difficulties and work with honesty and integrity to make the world a better place.”
She reminded the guests that from a modest beginning in 1995, the institute today had over 7,000 students on its roll.
“We enable the students to keep abreast of developments in a rapidly changing world. At Szabist, every student matters to us.”
She said the institute was the actualisation of the commitment of Benazir Bhutto to the progress of the youth and the country.
Congratulating the successful students, Szabist Chancellor Dr Azra Fazal said: “Our founding chancellor, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had great faith in the vibrant youth of this country. She believed that young people would never tire of their struggle to give the country its rightful place in the comity of nations.”
She said: “We groom our students so that they have the courage to dream of a better future, pursue that dream with a passion and inspire others to join them through their integrity and conviction.”
The chief guest of the event, former envoy to the US Sherry Rehman, congratulated the recipients of degrees and medals.
Turning to the students, she said: “Today the day is yours. We are here to share with you a milestone in your life and I am very happy to be a part of it. It is a moment of pride for your parents who have brought you up with the right values, for teachers who have been your guides, your mentors, and for us as we watch you brimming with positive energy.”
The degrees and medals were awarded for achievements in business administration, law, management, advertising, administrative sciences, psychology and other fields of study. Behroze Mirza won 10 gold medals in various categories.
Szabist Vice-President (Administration & Finance) Nasreen Haque also spoke on the occasion and acknowledged the conferral of BBA degrees on candidates.
