Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday directed the district administrations and the local bodies’ representatives to ensure that water accumulated on roads and in low-lying areas was pumped out on an emergency basis.

Declaring a rain emergency in Sindh, the CM asked the officials to cancel leaves and holidays of their staff members and make sure that their teams were on duty in the public’s time of need.

He said this was the first monsoon since local government representatives assumed their offices and would pose a stern test.

“This is your first test and I am sure you will do all in your power to efficiently solve the public’s problems.”

CM Shah directed the divisional commissioners and the deputy commissioners to extend all possible support to the local government representatives.

He asked them to help out the LG officials in keeping their areas neat and clean and also coordinate with power companies to ensure smooth power supply in their respective areas.

Shah directed the Karachi administration and all local bodies to proactively serve the people during the monsoon season.

“The DMCs must clean out all small nullahs in their respective jurisdictions and direct their staffers to pump out rain water accumulated on roads and in low-lying areas,” he said.

The chief minister also urged K-Electric to mobilise its workers and take measures to avoid tripping of feeders and ensure smooth power supply in the city.

He also asked the power utility to take necessary measures to provide uninterrupted power supply to the water board’s pumping stations.

He said citizen could to lodge their complaints, if any, at his complaint cell working in the CM House. The landline numbers are 021-9920756, 021-9920739 and 021-9920208-81 (ext 919).

He said people of Karachi would surely love to enjoy the downpour which would bring relief from the heat in the city.

He also directed the irrigation department to cancel the holidays of their staff members and ensure vigilance on the embankments of canals.

KMC on high alert

The city’s deputy mayor, Dr Arshad Abdullah Vohra, also directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s staff to make all emergency arrangements for the safety of the people during the monsoon rain in the city.

At a presser held the KMC building on Wednesday, Vohra said he had directed the KMC officials to ensure maintenance of machines that are used to clean nullahs.

He said the KMC staff had also been directed to pump out water from under passes.

Vohra, who is supervising the monsoon arrangements in absence of the mayor who has gone to Russia on an official tour, said he had also directed the KMC staff to make arrangements for cleaning garbage despite the fact that it was not his administration’s responsibility.

The deputy mayor said he had also directed the KMC officials to coordinate with the water board officials to ensure that all major 29 nullahs were cleaned. People can contact the KMC on its emergency numbers 021-992 30951 and 021-99244559, he added.
