LAHORE
THE Government of Punjab must allocate resources for Dar-ul Amaans in the provincial budget and ensure the implementation of the Women Empowerment Package 2014, which was announced by the government.
This was highlighted by Deputy Director of South Asia Partnership Pakistan (SAP-PK) in his speech on Thursday.
He was addressing an audience of civil society activists at a provincial advocacy forum under the SAP-PK’s Programme Effective Citizenship and Responsive Governance: Pro-Woman Laws and Implementations Gaps in Women Protection Institutions held at a local hotel on Thursday.
Women who take shelter in Dar-ul Amans are negatively stereotyped in our society but the society forgets the contributions of these women who are taking part in building the nation and nurturing the children even at the cost of their lives, he said.
He added that women were mostly vulnerable in their homes and this issue was becoming worst and pitiful that they were not protected anywhere be it their homes or in public.
Every passing year, the cases of violence against women are increasing and the gravity of the crime against women demands special attention of the civil society organisations, human rights activists and lawmakers.
Speakers at the forum expressed their deep concerns over the pathetic situation women were facing at homes and women protection institutes in Punjab due to the gaps in the implementation of procedures and mechanism of governance.
Sultan Mahmood, Coordinator SAP-PK Multan, talked of his research study on pro-women laws and implementation gaps in protection institutions at district level. He emphasised that there was a dire need to address issues in governance for the better functioning of institutions.
He mentioned three important pillars in this regard that were accountability, transparency and participation, which were the most important features of the effective governance of women protection institutions and police stations.
