KARACHI: Pakistan reached the quarter-finals of Asian Junior Team championships by beating Singapore and Korea at the National Squash Centre, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
Top seeds Pakistan won 3-0 against ninth seeds Singapore in the first pool match. Asim Khan beat Chua Man Chin 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 in 40 minutes; Ali Bukhari defeated Ben Chan 5-11, 11-9, 11-3, 12-10 in 43 minutes; and Tayyab Aslam overpowered Kah Ho 11-2, 9-11, 11-4, 11-8 in 32 minutes.
They won 3-0 against eighth seeds Korea in the second pool match. Asim Khan beat Tack Hyo Jin 11-6, 11-6, 11-9 in 30 minutes; Ali Bukhari thrashed Oh Sung Hack 11-9, 11-4, 11-6 in 25 minutes; and Tayyab Aslam defeated Yoo Sung Yeon 11-7, 11-8, 11-5 in 26 minutes.
Pakistan will face either Kuwait or Japan in the quarter-finals on Friday. The championship ends on February 1.
The team, being coached by Fahim Gul, also has Israr Ahmed.
Pakistan have won this championship 13 times. They won the inaugural edition in Singapore in 1983 by defeating Malaysia in the final.
Pakistan did not take part in the 14th edition of the championship held in Chennai, India, in 2009.
