Karachi mayor monitors water distribution process, urges CM to convene emergency meeting on water crisis

Residents of Yousuf Goth, New Karachi and Allahwali areas were provided with water a day after protesting persistent shortage of water supply to the areas during city mayor’s visit to Yousuf Goth to inaugurate a school.

Observing the water distribution process, Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar on Wednesday urged the Sindh chief minister to convene an immediate meeting to deal with the city’s acute water shortage.

The mayor stated that the water crisis warranted immediate attention of the authorities. He added that the water distribution and supply system should be fixed by restricting mafias operating water hydrants and tankers.

Akhtar was accompanied by DMC Central vice chairman Shakir Ali, senior director municipal service Masood Alam, Izhar Ahmed Khan, councillors and KWSB officials among others officials concerned.

Akhtar clarified that ensuring water supply to areas was not the local civic authority’s responsibility, however, he added that problem in any area of the city was their problem and that the civic administration is making all out efforts to solve them.

The mayor reportedly contacted KWSB officers following the protest, on Tuesday, who had assured him of providing water to the area on a preferential basis. Emergency water tanker service was used to provide water to the people who cannot, otherwise, afford to buy water from tankers.
