LAHORE: Renowned human rights activist Asma Jahangir on Sunday said it was a beauty of democracy that JIT or any investigation authority could summon the prime minister for probe.
Talking to Geo News, Asma said she felt a little bit hurt by the process and the democratic process once started should move forward in a democratic manner.
Explaining her point, she said calling an entire political party a mafia was painful. The courts never described the mafia as mafia when that actually ruled the country, like the PML-N of 1990s, she added.
Asma said they must understand that the freedom they were enjoying was only due to democracy. The JIT had been formed by the Supreme Court but it wasn’t apex court and could not insult the people, forcing them to sit for five hours, she noted.
Asma warned that the process desired to be moving forward would become lengthy if the people, who did not know how to use authority, were empowered. She said the prime minister appearance before the JIT wasn’t a big deal but it should not linked to the whole democratic process. The democratic system in Pakistan was only to the people, as neither judiciary nor military had promoted democracy in the country, she noted.
