The District Malir police on Wednesday claimed to have gunned down five Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan militants in an operation in the city’s Shah Latif area.
SSP Rao Muhammad Anwar said a team conducted a raid at a hideout in Nawab Goth that was identified by an intelligence source. An encounter broke out as soon as law enforcers arrived in the area as the militants tried to flee. “We managed to arrest five men, who are yet to be identified, in an injured condition. They were moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) but all five were pronounced dead on arrival,” said the SSP, who also admitted that some of their accomplices had managed to escape during the shootout.
A search of the hideout led to the recovery of two Kalashnikovs, two prepared suicide jackets, a large quantity of explosive materials and three pistols. “We also found several Google Maps printouts of sensitive locations including the Razzaqabad Police Training Centre,” said SSP Anwar, adding it was likely that the killed militants had been involved in last year’s attack at the centre.
Spy held by rangers
Rangers arrested 14 suspects on Wednesday including one believed to be a spy working with a foreign intelligence agency.
A Rangers spokesperson said the spy was arrested in a raid in Faqeera Goth. He was found in possession of sensitive documents.
In raids conducted in Keamari and Orangi, the paramilitary force arrested five terrorists affiliated with a banned outfit and seized their weapons.
Separately, Rangers conducted a raid in Malir City and rounded up eight suspected criminals. Their weapons were confiscated.
Rangers officials also conducted a targeted raid in Hingorabad on suspected hideouts of Lyari gangsters and arrested two alleged gangsters with weapons. A spokesman for the paramilitary force said the suspects were involved in heinous crimes in Lyari Division.
