Light drizzle causes traffic disruption on thoroughfares
Vehicular movement was partially disrupted after water accumulated on different thoroughfares as the city received a light drizzle early on Thursday morning and in the evening.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, merely 0.2 mm of rain was recorded in Karachi on Thursday.
But what was seen on roads was quite different as rainwater accumulated on various thoroughfares, including the Stadium road and near the Hassan Square where Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s sanitary workers were busy in draining out the water.
“Although the duration of drizzle was very short, but it caused accumulation of rainwater in different areas, including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Liaquatabad, and Sharea Faisal,” said Haris Ahmed, a courier service worker.
Haris, who regularly travels
on his motorbike, urged the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the
provincial government and the K-Electric to get prepared for regular spells of rains in the looming monsoon season, saying if a light drizzle could cause traffic disruption and problems on the roads, a heavy spell of rain could cause serious problems for the citizens.
An official of the city traffic police also confirmed that the light rain, which poured down at around 10 am, resulted in accumulation of water on some roads.
“But it did not cause any major traffic gridlock anywhere in the metropolis,” he added.
The police official, however, warned that problems could be faced by the citizens in case of regular spells of rain in Karachi, as nullahs were choked with garbage.
He asked the KMC to take immediately take measures so that vehicular movement should not be disrupted in the rainy season.
The met department said the highest temperature remained 36.5 degrees Celsius in the city on Thursday and forecasted that temperatures would reach 35 to 37 degrees Celsius on Friday with chances of light rain in the city.
