Legislation against madrassas unacceptable

PESHAWAR: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa head Mushtaq Ahmad Khan has said there should be no legislation against madrassas and warned that his party would quit the Pakistan Tehreek-ie-Insaf-led coalition government if any bill was moved in the provincial assembly without consultation.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, he said that nobody could dare legislate against madrassas in KP as long as JI was present in the provincial assembly. JI provincial general secretary Abdul Wasih, president Jamiat Ulema Ittehad KP Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali and provincial secretary information Syed Jamaat Ali Shah accompanied him to the news conference.

Mushtaq Ahmad Khan highlighted the importance of Ulema’s role in the independence of Pakistan. He said that presently 3.5 million students were receiving education in madrassas and also getting all basic necessities of life, including food, accommodation and medical treatment.

He said that no one could match the services that these Islamic seminaries were providing to the society. He said all graduates of madrassas were patriotic, but the enemies have launched propaganda against them since long under a well-devised conspiracy.

He asked the provincial government to desist from legislation in haste, adding that they also wanted reforms in the entire education system, but this would only be possible with mutual consultation.
