The agriculture sector
This refers to the WB report on the government’s expenditure on agriculture sector. According to the report, the country is lagging behind in agriculture sector as compared to other South Asian countries. There is a dire need to improve the sector and bring it at par with international standards. According to statistics of the PBS, the agriculture sector contributes 43 percent to the country’s economy. The government should work to upgrade the sector and provide seeds, fertilizers and pesticides to farmers at a subsidised rate.
There is also a dire need to train farmers. Many farmers don’t have a clue about modern machinery. It has been observed that the production of rice, wheat, sugarcane and cotton is rapidly declining. Another area which needs attention is the production of pulses, grains, fruits and vegetables both for domestic and exports needs. The water management must be improved to water crop in time.
