RMC upgraded as Rawalpindi Medical University

Principal Professor Umar appointed as VC

Rawalpindi Medical College (RMC) has been upgraded as Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) through an ordinance and Principal RMC and Chief Allied Hospitals Professor Dr. Muhammad Umar has been given responsibility of vice chancellor of the newly designated medical university.

Punjab health department has issued a notification in this regard on May 5. Punjab Medical College Faisalabad and Nishtar Medical College Multan have also been upgraded as medical universities along with RMC.

Professor of Medicine Dr. Muhammad Umar who has been awarded national award, Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2015 by the President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain in recognition of his services in medical field has been appointed as acting VC of RMU however, new inductions of required staff for the medical university would be done in next few weeks.

It has also been decided that the old campus of RMC located along Tipu Road would serve as the main campus of Rawalpindi Medical University. The intake of medical students at RMC this year would be done under the act of RMU and the administration of RMU has started working on it, said Dr. Umar while talking to ‘The News’.

He said the reconstitution of RMC as RMU would help promote medical education in this region of the country further along with bringing improvement in medical services being rendered to public through public sector healthcare facilities in Rawalpindi division.

It is important to mention here that Professor Umar has received letter of appreciation by Prime Minister of Pakistan for establishing first Centre for Liver and Digestive Diseases (CLD) in Holy Family Hospital and first RFA Centre in a public sector hospital of Pakistan in 2011 while received Best Professional and Education Services Award from Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) in April 2012.

Professor Umar has been serving as Provincial Clinical Coordinator of National Program for Prevention & Control of Hepatitis in Pakistan since 2005 and is Member Federal drug Registration Appellate Board, Pakistan since 2009 while he is also Member of Human Organ Transplant Authority (HOTA), Pakistan since 2007.
