A newly-wed woman was found dead in a room of a multi-storeyed hotel in Saddar in the wee hours of Sunday.

Police took the 21-year-old’s body to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where she was identified as Farheen. They said the woman had married a Pakistani American named Shaheer around two months ago.

The woman’s family members, who reside in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal locality, told the police that Farheen had left eloped with the man two months ago.

Police said they had married in court and had been living in the hotel for the past month, adding that the husband had fled to Dubai hours before the body was discovered.

SSP (South) Saqib Ismail Memon said the police suspected that the woman was strangled to death, but efforts had been made to make the incident look like a suicide.

Memon said the woman’s mother told the police in her statement that Shaheer had beaten up Farheen several times.

He added that the mother wished to register a murder case against the husband. “Shaheer went into hiding that suggests that he has murdered his wife.” However, no case was registered until the time this report was filed.
