Breast cancer incidence highest in Pakistan

Government College University Lahore female faculty and staff members of 40 years age and above Thursday underwent the mammogram as a precaution against the breast cancer which is the most common cancer in Pakistan and kills more than 40,000 women every year in the country.

According to a press release issued here, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) in collaboration with the GCU Quality Enhancement Cell set up a special mobile mammogram facility for one-day on the university campus and conducted mammogram of female faculty and staff members of the university free-of-cost.

Speaking on the occasion, GCU QEC Director Iram Sohail said that Pakistan has the highest incidence of breast cancer in Asia, so every woman above the age of 40 should go for a mammogram test once in a year.

“Women in the developing countries, like Pakistan tend to die at greater rates than in more developed countries because the disease is generally detected when it is in its advance stages,” she said. “Our mission statement is Early Detection, Save Lives,” said Iram Sohail.
