The Pakistan Navy on Wednesday celebrated the completion of fifty years of its Special Service Group (SSG) – a group comprising naval commandos.

As per a statement, the event was presided by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah and included a number of activities, including the launch of a booklet on the special group’s history as well as a fire power demonstration wherein the commandos displayed their special skills to deal with terrorist attacks, hostage and other rescue operations.

Since its establishment on March 29, 1967, the SSG has served the nation with valour and bravery, the statement said.

Highly trained and armed with bullets and brains, the SSG (N) provides a deterrent capability to the navy and also served as an offensive punch for the enemies, the statement added. “They [SSG commandos] are undoubtedly an icon of honour, badge of excellence and symbol of distinction for Pakistan Navy.”

Speaking on the occasion, the naval chief appreciated the achievements and sacrifices of the SSG (N) over the past 50 years in the line of duty.

He also acknowledged invaluable and meritorious services rendered by war heroes, veterans and the family members of the SSG (N) Shuhadas, for the defence of the motherland.

The admiral, while highlighting the importance of the special operations forces, said the contemporary environment had seen a steady shift from conventional operations to an asymmetric domain and bordering on hybrid warfare.

“This has brought the role of the special operations forces to the forefront which is becoming the instrument of choice as a force-multiplier in the current scenario.”

The naval chief said that significant participation of the SSG (N) during various Anti-Terrorist Operations and Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief Operations (HADR) amply reflected the dedication and professionalism of the SSG (N) which had performed its tasks remarkably well.

The naval chief congratulated all veterans of the SSG (N) on setting a fine legacy to be followed by younger generations.

Earlier during the day, Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah joined the hardcore physical workout of the SSG (N) and undertook underwater diving.

Besides serving and retired SSG (N) officers, CPOs and sailors, a large number of distinguished guests from sister services and other arms of the Pakistan Navy also witnessed the celebrations.
