Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Asghar Nawaz appreciated the students for keen interest in the subject of disaster management and expressed the hope that youths would play pivotal role in mitigating disasters both natural and man-made in future.
He was speaking at the ceremony held to distribute laptops, iPads, shields and certificates to the participants of the ‘Tayyar Pakistan’ Infotainment Game Show arranged by the NDMA as part of its awareness and education campaign meant to manage disasters in the country.
The Government Science College Peshawar won the show with the Fazayia Intermediate College Lahore and Government Adamjee Science College Karachi securing second and third positions respectively.
Students of higher secondary school level from all four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan participated in the event.
The other objective of the event was to create awareness among youths in particular and general public at large of the threats posed by all types of disasters. It was also aiming at educating the people on the means and methods to develop resilience against disasters.
The scope of the show included elementary knowledge about geography of Pakistan and AJK, disaster management mechanism in the country, climate change issues being faced by the country, types of natural and man-made disasters, disaster management cycle, and preparedness and response measures against/during various types of natural and man-made disasters. The game show format included quizzes and demonstration of response drills.
