KARACHI: That ladies golf is picking up in Pakistan was evident during the recently-held second PGF Ladies Amateur Golf Championship here at the well-manicured course of the Karachi Golf Club recently.

Dozens of lady golfers from all over the country featured in the two-day championship that saw three players from Karachi winning the top honours.

It was a Karachi-based South Korean, Cho Young Me, who won the title by five strokes. A 9-handicapper, Young Me, fired impressive rounds of 79 and 80 over the course of two windy days to win comfortably.

Humera Khalid, a seasoned educationist, was the runner-up as she pushed aside three former national ladies champions to win the silver medal in the main category of the championship.

“I have been working hard on my game despite the fact that I am a full-time mother and a working woman,” says Humera, who has in recent years emerged as one of the most consistent lady golfers in the country. “And it has certainly helped.”

Humera overcame Aania Farooq by three strokes. Aania took the third place with an aggregate of 167. The net title in the gold category was won by Islamabad’s Rimsha Ijaz.

Naghmana Atif and Najma Islam won gold medals in the silver and bronze cetegories respectively.

Brig Nayyar Afzal, the Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) secretary, told ‘The News’ that PGF will continue supporting the cause of ladies golf in Pakistan. “We will also invest in junior programmes in order to secure a better future for Pakistan golf,” he said.
