Islamabad: Dr. Anjum Javed has assumed additional charge as administrator of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) till the recovery of Dr. Altaf Hussain, who underwent a surgical intervention Tuesday after suffering from cardiac arrest.

Dr. Altaf, who is a chain smoker, was rushed to the PIMS emergency late Tuesday night, where he underwent angioplasty. Even though PIMS is apparently a smoke-free hospital, no measures have ever been taken to stop doctors and other staff from smoking within the hospital premises.

The Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) Prof. Dr. Javed Akram explained that Dr. Anjum Javed has been given additional charge because he is not a smoker, which should also mean that no future administrator of PIMS would be a smoker. The VC is also stated to have assured strict action against doctors who smoke within the hospital.

Meanwhile, Sadaqat Zehra has been appointed chief of Nursing at the Federal Government Services Hospital (FGHS-Polyclinic) in place of Rita Yasmeen, who has retired from the post. Sadaqat has assumed charge of her new responsibilities.
