Police in Mardan kill man mistaking him for suicide bomber
MARDAN: In an unfortunate incident, the policemen on Thursday shot dead a man outside the local courts on the Mall Road after they mistook him for a suicide bomber.
Officials said Ulas Khan, a resident of Shireen Koto located on the outskirts of Mardan city, was passing the Mall Road on his bicycle outside the local Kutchery when the cops on security duty asked him to stop for search.
"Unfortunately, the man did not stop when signalled by the cops. The cops first hit his bicycle with their vehicle when he didn't listen to the warning shouts. The policemen fired at him when he tried to run away," said an official.
The injured man was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The angry relatives of the deceased wanted to register the first information report (FIR) against the cops, but the police refused to register the case.
They placed the body of the man on the road at the busy Bacha Khan Chowk and blocked it for traffic for several hours. However, the protesters dispersed peacefully after the City Police Station registered the case as demanded by them.
