The decision to import 200 garbage-lifting machines, along with other equipment to curtail improper waste management, from China should be welcomed. Once the machines have been cleared by next week, they will be effectively utilised to ensure cleanliness in Karachi.
However, this strategy will only have the desired impact if a comprehensive plan to rid the city of solid waste is chalked out and duly implemented. Suitable steps must be taken to ascertain which areas will need to be targeted. Citizens must also be engaged in the waste management process and schools and colleges should be encouraged to conduct cleanliness drives across the city and build awareness among students. Cosmetic measures on their own will achieve little without the active involvement of all segments of society.
